A trial offers the perfect opportunity to hone a variety of critical thinking and communication skills. Our Mock Trial course is holistically designed to foster student growth in all areas of language arts.
Students spend the first week of the course carefully reading a novel, whose pages provide the characters, setting, and crime for the mock trial. Putting literary analysis to practical use, students mine the novel for proof in support of their side of the case, all while reflecting critically on the evidentiary value of their findings. Supplementary readings introduce students to keystones of the legal genre, such as briefs and affidavits. Students also gain a significantly expanded vocabulary, including an arsenal of new legal terms.
During the second week of the course, students both examine and compose within a variety of written genres—legal documents, informational writing, newspaper articles and speeches—in preparation for the trial. They also develop the fundamental principles of persuasive speech, or rhetoric, as they learn to deploy an array of rhetorical devices in their writing. Finally, students build social confidence and poise as they practice managing their own self-presentation in the process of speaking publicly.
This course is fun, fast-paced, and challenging. It is an excellent course for rising 5th and 6th graders who want to improve their language arts skills across the board.
This two-week course meets Monday through Friday for three hours each day, and is designed for students entering grades 5-6.
Space is very limited for our summer programs. Please do not wait until the last minute to enroll. If there is more than a week before the course starts, a $200 deposit will be due when enrolling, with the balance due one week before the course begins.
