8th Grade Language Arts

Academic Year Language Arts

In our eighth grade course, students analyze the most grammatically complex sentences from classic literature. Students apply advanced research and essay-writing skills to papers about complex subjects such as artistic expressions, historical movements, great discoveries, and ancient ethics. They also continue to broaden their vocabularies with the study of advanced words and Latin and Greek stems. We use Michael Clay Thompson's language arts series to challenge our high-achieving students.

Reading Sources

By introducing our students to complex passages from some of the world's greatest writers, we teach students both how to understand intricately-expressed ideas as well as to convey their own insights. Below is a sample of the high-quality classic literature and primary sources from which course material is drawn:
  • Much Ado about Nothing by William Shakespeare
  • Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  • Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe
  • Walden by Henry David Thoreau
  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
  • A Passage to India by E.M. Forster
  • Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
  • The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe
