6th Grade Language Arts

Academic Year Language Arts

Our sixth-grade course provides guidance and practice to help students move beyond grade level in reading, writing, and critical thinking. Through integrated grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing lessons, students build the skills they need to craft their own insightful interpretations of a text and to convey their ideas clearly and elegantly in writing. Lessons are structured to guide students through increasingly sophisticated selections from a variety of fiction and non-fiction sources. Students learn to approach these sources from multiple angles, as each lesson uses a single text as a basis for reading, analysis, and discussion; writing and vocabulary; and grammar. Through close analysis and observation, students learn methods from linguistics to derive grammatical rules from real-world examples of written and spoken English. Along the way, students practice emulating the authors they are reading to build their own writing skills, and work closely with their teachers and peers to learn the craft of literary analysis.

What happens in class?

Each lesson includes a different combination of:

Homework

Students should expect to spend 60-90 minutes on homework every week, including short reading assignments relevant to what's happening in class, vocabulary and grammar exercises they will complete through the course homepage, multi-week writing projects, and sustained reading of books they will choose from a list we provide. Students write essays, creative projects, and formal presentations, which they'll workshop in class and polish at home. While students are drafting these projects, we try to have most of the writing happen in class so students can get instant feedback from their teachers, but students will be expected to complete some writing at home. At the end of each trimester, students will choose one of their papers to polish and put into a portfolio.

Teacher Feedback

Students will receive frequent informal feedback from their teacher during class. In addition to in-class writing activities, students will choose three of their multi-week projects to workshop in class, and polish for their course portfolio. Teachers will provide detailed written feedback on each portfolio piece.

Exams

Students will take three in-class exams, one at the end of each trimester. Exams will focus on the grammar, vocabulary, analysis, and writing skills students are learning in class.

"Our homeschooled son is extremely gifted in math and science.  He really feels at home at AoPS Academy.  Through coaching and personal attention at AoPS, he achieved a 5 in AP Calculus at 11 years old and a 4 in AP Statistics at 12.  He also achieved an 800 on SAT II math at 12 years old.  Our son feels very comfortable in the atmosphere of AoPS, where being gifted in math is not looked down on, but treated with respect.  He has truly found his peers at AoPS Academy.

AoPS Academy allows my son to be himself, learn that there are other kids well advanced in math, and gives him the confidence to know that it is OK to be great in math, and that other people will respect and value his ability."
